The Solarfabrik 2020 initiative was born at the start of 2007 by the Fraunhofer FEP and with the support of the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs and Labor (SMWA). Companies and research organizations in Saxony working in the area of photovoltaic technology are participating in this initiative.

Objective: Drastic reduction in the manufacturing costs of photovoltaic modules |

Vision: Production of interconnected PV modules for large areas in a favorable-cost, in-line vacuum process |
In order to reach this objective the Solarfabrik 2020 initiative has been established as an umbrella organization for diverse R&D projects which will come together in a visionary way. Another objective of the initiative is to further strengthen the very good position of Saxon plant manufacturers and to enable these companies to act as general contractors for the construction of large solar factories.
